Snow Leopard Trek Ladakh


This part of Himalaya is blessed with wild flora and fauna which are either endangered or have very peculiar and interesting feature which would definitely mesmerize human eyes. Its amazing to see creatures in either barren rocks or are found in wholly snow bound area with the temperature fluctuation ranging from -35 to + 35. No one will stop appreciating the Gods creation but would applaud God for creating a master piece in this area and for those who loves to see animal, its just a paradise. The following animal along with its habitat can be seen in this part of Ladakh Himalaya :-

Snow Leopard Trek Ladakh

1. Snow Leopard Trek (Panthera uncia)
Its an animal belonging to the wild cat family and Ladakh Himalaya is one of the place where this amazing creature is still intact in its original habitat without human interference. This animal love rugged mountain and rocky region where it remain totally camouflaged. The ideal time for observing this dotted, shy animal is from the onset of winter (October – March) to onset of spring. Although snow leopards are solitary animal by nature but they often comes together in order to mate and that particular season is mostly February or March. A Snow Leopard can produce 1-5 offspring at a time with a single male.

The territory in Ladakh Himalaya where the possibility of sighting this animal is maximum are Hemis National Park or Stok Range and some village in west Ladakh particularly Ney Phu, UlleyPhu, and the Hills surrounding Skindiang village, who knows you could be the last observer of Snow Leopard. The snow leopard cant survive on its own so nature has provided him with challenging meal in the form of Urial, Bharal and blue sheep which are highly alert and difficult prey. Its worthwhile to have a glimpse the fight between this two predator and prey for their own survival. Snow leopard can jump a maximum of 7 metre with lovely balance because of its thick and stout tail which helps in balancing.

2. Blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur)
This animal constitute the main component of snow leopard diet. This animal is found in good number in some region of ladakh Himalaya where the herb and shrub are in abundance. This animal is very alert and its worthy to see a survival fight between the prey and the predator.

Sketch itinerary

the emphasis of this program is on the observation of the Snow Leopard.

Day 1: arrival in leh, acclimatization day on 3,500 m altitude. pickup by our staff at leh airport, transfer to hotel. afternoon sightseeing of shanti stupa, tsemo gompa with car, and explore leh bazaar on foot. Evening at your leisure. overnight in leh hotel.

Day 2: around leh. we will have two excursions with little walking. visit of some marshes along the indus river, and a nearby monastery. overnight in leh hotel.

Day 3: after breakfast drive to the trailhead for our camp. all our bags will be transferred to be packed on animals, except what we wish to carry ourselves. walk to our camp, lunch. rest of the day will be spent in the vicinity of camp, looking for snowleopards, other mammals and birds. we may offer the option to hike a couple more miles in the afternoon, before returning for dinner. overnight in camp.

Day 4: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 5: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 6: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 7: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 8: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 9: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 10: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 11: Trek to Snow Leopard valley husing or in tarbong valley. overnight in camp.

Day 12: trek back to zingchan, and drive back to leh. overnight in hotel.

Day 13: departure from leh with sweet memories from ladakh. end of tour.
